Gasparovic Confirms Slovak Support for Montenegro's EU and NATO Bids

Bratislava, January 18 (TASR) - During his meeting with President of Montenegro Milo Djukanovic in Bratislava on Monday, Slovak President Ivan Gasparovic confirmed his country's support for Montenegro joining the European Union and NATO.

"You belong among the successful countries in the Balkans region, and that is important for all partners in the region, as well as for the whole EU. We're convinced that Slovakia's experience with EU and NATO accession will be of benefit to you while meeting your goals," said Gasparovic, adding that the EU can never be complete without Montenegro and other countries of the Western Balkans.

Djukanovic confirmed that his country is ready to continue reforms as a part of the integration process, mainly in the consolidation of the rule of law, the fight against corruption and reform of the judiciary system.

During the meeting, both presidents evaluated bilateral relations as friendly and developing dynamically. They discussed co-operation, mainly in the economic sphere, which they stated needs new impulses. They also said that the development of mutual trade and economic co-operation fall significantly short of the potential of both economies. One good sign is the revival in trade exchanges, which have increased in recent years.
