ZAP: Slovaks Took Advantage of Scrapyard Contribution Scheme

Bratislava, January 17 (TASR) - A number of used passenger cars and cars not heavier than 3.5 tonnes imported in 2009 to Slovakia fell by 21.64 percent on an annual basis to stand at 78.834, the Automotive Industry Association (ZAP) said.

"The global financial and economic crisis notwithstanding, 2009 saw fewer registered used as opposed to new cars. This is largely due to government's trade-in programme early in the year, when many were able to buy a new one car by trading in their old one," ZAP secretariat director Maria Novakova said.

By make, most in demand among used cars were Volkswagen (13.46 percent), Skoda (10.25 percent), Ford (10.23 percent), Renault (6.76 percent) and Peugeot (6.44 percent).
