SMK to Assess Requests for Membership Renewal on Individual Basis

Bratislava, January 16 (TASR) - The ethnic-Hungarian SMK party is ready to take an individual approach in assessing applications on renewing memberships of former party members who have left SMK recently, party leader Pal Csaky said following a sessions of SMK's Slovakia-wide council on Saturday.

Csaky said that he has information that some of the party's former members left SMK under pressure or are now sorry to have left the party.

Four SMK MPs led by former party leader Bela Bugar quit the party in June 2009 and set up a new party called Most-Hid. Some more senior SMK officials left their posts at regional and district levels, followed by dozens of party members.

"It's now up to them, as well as up to our members who have to evaluate whether the renewal of their memberships is acceptable for us or not," said SMK chairman, adding that more departures from SMK are highly unlikely.

Turning to the council's session, Csaky said that the political message of the gathering is that SMK will strive to do all it can in order for the current governing Coalition to be replaced. "Slovakia is currently being led by incompetent people who aren't up to running this state," said Csaky. According to SMK leader, the current leaders of the country are only generating trouble.

The policies that SMK is planning to pursue are aimed at ensuring the best possible potential for talks concerning the setting-up of a new Cabinet following the general election due in June, said Csaky. Current Opposition partners - SDKU-DS and KDH parties - are the most likely partners for the talks. "If things go wrong in this respect, then we'll have to consider other options. We haven't discussed such options as yet, however," said Csaky when asked about possible post-election cooperation with the current leading coalition Smer-SD party.
