Venice Commission to Visit Slovakia and Examine Language Law

Bratislava, January 15 (TASR) - The Council of Europe's (CE) advisory Venice Commission is due to come to Slovakia next week to give its legal views on the State Language Act, a recently adopted amendment to which led to protests from the country's Hungarian minority and neighbouring Hungary over perceived new limitations on ethnic-language rights, the CE Information Office announced Friday.

Invited by the Foreign Affairs Ministry, the Commission experts will discuss the issue with representatives of state authorities, ethnic groups and civil society. "Slovakia considers this pro-active approach to tap the CE's professional capacities as another move towards ensuring that objective insights into the issue take precedence over improper politicising," said the ministry.

The ethnic-Hungarian SMK party has said that it will provide the Commission experts with its own analysis along with comparisons of the content of the State Language Act and the European Charter of Regional and Minority Language Rights.
