Bratislava, January 14 (TASR) - As of Thursday and until the end of January, tolls won't be collected on almost 1,500 kilometres of 1st category roads in Slovakia.
This is a result of an agreement at a meeting on Monday between Prime Minister Robert Fico and carriers, representatives of employers, unions, oil refinery Slovnaft, and the Finance and Transport Ministries. Tolls will still be collected on motorways, however.
This transition period is one of the concessions given to dissatisfied hauliers by the Government in connection with the launch of the electronic road-toll system on January 1, 2010. In addition, the tariffed road sections on so-called 1st class roads will be divided into smaller parts, raising their number from the current 826 to 1,068.
Another amendment to the system will be the marking of tolled sections of 1st class roads to show where the sections begin and end. This should be carried out by the National Highway Company (NDS) by the end of June.
Fico also promised to reduce excise tax on diesel by 9 cents per litre.
