SNS Proposes Extensive Changes to Ministry Set-ups

Bratislava, January 14 (TASR) - The Slovak National Party (SNS) agrees with the idea of reducing the number of Slovakia's ministries after the general election in June and is ready to present its own proposals to the Government, said SNS chairman Jan Slota at a press conference on Thursday.

"The Economy Ministry actually doesn't manage anything at present. The ministry itself seems rather deaf and dumb to us," said Slota, who thinks that this ministry should be united with the Construction and Regional Development Ministry. "We see the preconditions for joining together the Environment Ministry and Agriculture Ministry as well," he added.

Slota also sees scope for merging the Culture and Education Ministries. If such an initiative isn't successful, the party is ready to promote the idea of an Education, Science, Research and Sports Ministry.

In addition, the Interior Ministry could merge with the Defence Ministry to form the Armed Forces Ministry with its civilian part transferred under the Construction Ministry.

"We're intensively working on a new territory-legal zoning of Slovakia. Slovakia could save considerable financial means. This would also be in line with EU recommendations," said Slota, adding that he would prefer to divide Slovakia into three Higher Territorial Units (VUCs), instead of the current eight, plus two cities - Bratislava and Kosice.
