Bratislava, January 14 (TASR) - Slovakia is ready to send a rescue team made up of four medics, four dog-handlers and their dogs and material humanitarian aid to help earthquake-stricken Haiti, Lucia Garajova from the Interior Ministry told TASR on Thursday.
According to Garajova, the material aid should consist of 15 large tents for 10-12 people, four 30-kilowatt generators, 1,000 blankets, 500 beds and 1,000 sets of clothes. "We're currently dealing with the issue of transport with the Monitoring Centre in Brussels. The European Union has already sent a expert team to monitor the region," she stated.
The Caribbean country of Haiti was struck by a earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale on Tuesday followed by two 5.9- and 5.5-magnitude aftershocks. The epicentre was only 16 kilometres from Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince.
Due to interrupted communications with the country no official information on the number of dead and injured is known at the moment. Several Slovaks who were in Haiti during the earthquake are thought to be safe.
