Bratislava, January 13 (TASR) - President Ivan Gasparovic held a New Year's meeting with governors from the eight higher territorial units (VUCs) and congratulated them on their being (re-)elected late last year.
Gasparovic said that he hoped the governors will be able to live up to the pledges they made to citizens prior to the regional elections in November.
Governors briefed Gasparovic about the VUC budgets. They say their income has dropped radically as a result of the financial crisis. According to Trnava VUC governor Tibor Mikus, they also discussed measures to be taken to mitigate the crisis fallout, as well as issues concerning social affairs, roads and others.
November's elections were the third since Slovakia was divided into eight regional self-administration units – Bratislava, Trnava, Trencin, Zilina, Banska Bystrica, Nitra, Presov and Kosice.
