Meciar: I Can't Support Act on Proving Origin of Property

Bratislava, January 12 (TASR) - LS-HZDS chairman Vladimir Meciar said on Tuesday that he won't support the proposal for an act on proving the origin of property drawn up by Prime Minister Robert Fico.

"I can't raise my hand for this," said Meciar at a press conference, adding that Fico's intention to "push through his vision come-what-may only brings further shortcomings".

Meciar views Fico's strategy of bypassing the declared unconstitutionality of the original law by preparing a small amendment to the Slovak Constitution as a fundamental mistake by his legislative team. "Premier Fico is trying to explain the Constitution by a law, but this should be vice-versa. The Constitution has to explain laws," said Meciar, adding that if somebody changes the Constitution, they also change people's rights and obligations. "This can't be supported," he stressed.

Meciar at the same time denied that he has a personal problem with the act. "In general, it's said that this (law) is against Meciar and that's all right. But no, this doesn't concern Meciar. This is about all people, because the Constitution is due to be changed," he stressed.

"Our 'improvers' of the law have flown so far away from the basis (of the problem) in their fantasies and engage in such nonsense in pursuit of fame that I can't bear it," said Meciar concerning two law proposals - Fico's and another prepared by Christian Democrat (KDH) vice-chair Daniel Lipsic.

According to Meciar, a "whole complex of measures" should be passed in the fight against corruption, as the issue is a very wide one. "This isn't only a question of consequences (of corruption), but of any deformity in the law in favour of certain property groups, bribes, influencing decisions, pushing through the interests of the rich, dealing with state money ... The whole system will have to be re-considered," he added, expressing hope that such steps will be taken, as this could help Slovakia save money and push the country forward.
