Transportation Ministry to Introduce Ticketing and Lower Penalties

Bratislava, January 8 (TASR) - Lorries will be able to use an alternative payment method for travelling on toll roads, TASR learned from Transportation, Post and Telecommunication ministry spokesman Stanislav Jurikovic on Friday.

After holding talks with road transporters association CESMAD, the Transportation Ministry intends to temporarily introduce the so-called ticketing. Currently, the only option available for lorries is to register into the electronic road-toll system by purchasing an OBU Board Unit.

The ticketing will be introduced over the course of upcoming two weeks and operated by current road-toll system provider SkyToll.

According to Transportation Minister Lubomir Vazny, the reason behind launching the ticketing payment method are the kilometers-long queues forming at the border crossings, which has begun to emerge after the introduction of the eletronic road-toll system (in place as of January 1, 2010). The longest delay for lorries is at the border crossings with the Czech Republic and Hungary. After the holidays, however, the ministry expects the border crossings with Ukraine and Poland to be among worst affected.

The ministry has also decided to lower the fine for the OBU Board Unit connected incorrectly. Currently, the penalty amounts to €1,655. "We've promised to decrease it somewhere to the neighbourhood of €100-120," said Jurikovic.

In the later half of January, the lenght of toll sections is also planned be revised, so the road-toll collection would be more just.
