Road Transporters: We'll Stay on Roads in Bratislava

Zvolen/Bratislava, January 8 (TASR) - Small and medium-sized road carriers are ending their street-blocking protest in towns around Slovakia. However, after two days of protesting by blocking roads of Bratislava, they stay on roads in Slovakia's capital.

That's the outcome of a Friday session of the Slovak Road Transporters Union (UNAS) representatives who met in Zvolen (Banska Bystrica region) to discuss their further steps in a protest that has been making traffic conditions in Bratislava complicated. Journalists were informed by Jaroslav Polacek from UNAS.

Carriers call on Premier Robert Fico and Transport Minister Lubomir Vazny to make sure that their four demands will be met - excise taxes on fuels being cut, a lower rate for road tax, halting the operation of the toll-collection system and relounching it in six months, and fair-play rules on paying for using short sections of motorways, highways and first-class roads.

Road-carriers are wrapping their protest outside Bratislave in hope to meet with Prime Minister Robert Fico to discuss this matter. The meeting should take place on Monday morning, but only on condition that protests are discontinued, which is what Fico insisted on.
