Figel Surprised at Sulik's Problem With Dzurinda's Chairmanship

Bratislava, January 7 (TASR) - Chairman of the Christian Democrats (KDH) Jan Figel on Thursday expressed his surprise at the reply given by the Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party to SDKU-DS's offer to form a pre-election coalition.
"I can't assess it otherwise than with a big question mark," said Figel in reaction to SaS chairman Richard Sulik's statement that a joint SDKU-SaS list of candidates will only be possible if SDKU chairman Mikulas Dzurinda isn't at the top.
"It seems strange to me when one of the partners comes to the table distancing themselves fundamentally and antagonistically from a key person," said Figel, adding that he has already expressed his interest in co-operation between the Right, strengthening trust between individual parties and looking for a suitable format of co-operation.
SDKU views SaS's reply as improper and unacceptable, but has given the non-parliamentary party the chance to revise its stance. Sulik, on the other hand, is insisting on the aforementioned condition, stating that SaS is ready to run for the 2010 general election on its own. He has defended his condition by describing Dzurinda as a person who has been in politics for too long and has gradually lost his credibility.
