Lajcak: Slovak-Hungarian Issues Will Re-appear Before Elections

Bratislava, January 7 (TASR) - Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajcak has told TASR that he expects that Slovak-Hungarian issues will again become part of the pre-election agenda of certain political parties, and that this will have a negative influence on bilateral relations.

"It's important for us to handle this so that it doesn't exceed a reasonable level and doesn't harm bilateral relations, because they are much more important than the victory of one or other party," said Lajcak.

"On the other hand, I currently have a very bad feeling about the lack of self-reflection on the Hungarian side. I believe that it (self-reflection) is there somewhere and I believe that we'll see it in action," he added.

The Slovak Foreign Affairs Ministry is striving for correct, positive and constructive relations, said Lajcak, adding that he finds his Hungarian counterpart Peter Balazs to be a person who is attempting the same.

Lajcak stressed that he doesn't agree with the interpretation that Slovak-Hungarian issues mainly come to the surface when other bigger problems - such as the effects of the crisis - need to be covered up. "It's a simplified vision and I don't accept it. Slovakia names its problems ... transparently and tackles them transparently. We don't need to drag attention to something else," he stressed.
