Bratislava, January 5 (TASR) - Slovak road transporters association CESMAD Slovakia, along with its Czech, Polish and Hungarian partners, has called on Slovakia's Transport Ministry to immediately launch toll collection on national motorways via the so-called 'ticket system', claiming that this needs to be introduced on main entry routes into the country.
The road transporters' call is also addressed to the National Highway Company (NDS) as well as SkyToll, the company that runs the toll-collection system.
"We call on these institutions to get the ticket system running at the said spots. Launching the system is the only way to avoid transport collapsing across Slovakia," CESMAD Slovakia general secretary Pavol Reich said on Tuesday.
A five-kilometre-long traffic jam of lorries was created in northern Moravia (the Czech Republic) on the Czech-Slovak border near the village of Mosty u Jablunkova on Monday, with the new road-toll system, which has been in place as of January 1, blamed for the hold-up. According to the Czech police, the problem was partly caused by the fact that onboard units for measuring the tolls can't be obtained directly at the border crossing but only further into Slovak territory.
According to CESMAD Slovakia, even relevant legislation allows for the launch of a ticket system without negative effects on toll collection.
Among the advantages of the ticket system is the fact that transporters don't need to register themselves and are not obliged to pay a €50 fee for an onboard unit or a €50 deposit. They would only pay for the number of kilometres travelled instead.
CESMAD Slovakia is an association made up of 1,100 Slovak road transporters.
