US Marks Anniversary of End of Communism in Former Czechoslovakia

Washington, November 20 (TASR) - A series of events were held in the United States of America to mark the 20th anniversary of Velvet Revolution on November 17 which toppled the communist regime in the former Czechoslovakia.

The House of Representatives unanimously approved a Resolution on Thursday congratulating Czechs and Slovaks on their achievements in the past two decades and wished them much success in the future.

Slovak Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajcak received the Resolution from its author Congressman John Mica at a gala dinner hosted by Slovaks marking the anniversary.

The document highly values developments in the Czech Republic and Slovakia and praises both countries' contribution as members of the European Union and NATO, and in promoting the shared values of democracy and freedom.

In its preamble the resolution invokes a special US relationship with Slovakia and the Czech Republic which is grounded in common interests and a strong bond of friendship and mutual respect and close co-operation.

Lajcak presented Congressman John Mica and Congressman Joseph Sestak with Slovak Foreign Ministry's Golden Medals for their personal contribution to the enhancement of Slovak-US relations.
