Analyst: It's Standard to Reject Opposition Proposals in Parliament

Bratislava, January 4 (TASR) - Nobody can deny the Opposition the right to legislative initiatives, but it's debatable whether the Coalition will support its proposals in the end, political analyst Juraj Marusiak told TASR on Monday in response to a statement by Parliamentary Chair Pavol Paska, who said that it is folly to think that the Opposition has the right to take part in the execution of power.

"Not only in the current parliament, but also in former parliaments the governing majority didn't support opposition proposals. It's a common occurrence in the history of Slovak parliamentarism," said Marusiak. He added that the opposition should be allowed to criticise the government and supervise state power, but it shouldn't take part in its execution. "The origin of the term 'opposition' is linked to the fact that it was the part of parliament that had no position related to the execution of power," he said.

Analyst Grigorij Meseznikov pointed out that opposition lawmakers have received their legitimacy from the public in elections, and regardless of their share of power in parliament, they take part in legislative power. "The fact that the Coalition doesn't allow the Opposition to engage in legislative work is a testimony to their perception of the execution of power rather than the political culture," he said.
