New York, November 20 (TASR) - Slovak Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajcak, currently visiting the United States, is to meet UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon late on Friday to tell him of his country's resolve to boost its military engagement in Afghanistan, activities in the Balkans and its work involving UN security reform.
Regarding Afghani engagement, Lajcak wants to bring pressure to bear on the government of freshly inaugurated president Hamid Karzai to step up the fight against corruption and to step the institution building in Afghanistan.
"Slovakia will back the drive of the international community to stabilise and develop the country, especially via its participation in the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF)," said Lajcak, who also intends to talk to Ban Ki-moon about climate change, where Slovakia backs the UN chief's effort to reach a legally binding treaty to cut emissions at next month's UN conference in Copenhagen.
Both officials will also assess Slovakia's past actions in the UN security sector reform, in which Slovak diplomacy is working at the instigation of UN Secretary General since its stint as a temporary member of the UN Security Council in 2006-07. Slovakia has since also staged two regional events to coordinate efforts of the international community in post-conflict areas (in November 2007 in South Africa, in September 2009 in Argentina and next year it is preparing for Indonesia).
