President, MPs and Government Won't Have Salaries Valorised in 2010

Bratislava, January 1 (TASR) - Slovak MPs, the president and members of the Government won't have their salaries valorised in 2010 according to an amendment to the Income Tax Act that was signed by President Ivan Gasparovic last year.

The measure was passed in Parliament via an amending proposal submitted by Smer-SD MP Jana Lassakova and supported by her opposition and coalition colleagues.

The salary freeze should save state coffers €398,000. The move enjoyed the consensus of constitutional officials based on the constraints presented by the economic crisis.

According to valid legislation, a member of the Slovak Cabinet receives a monthly salary of 1.5-times an MP's salary. A Slovak MP's monthly salary is set at three times the national nominal average.

Apart from the basic salary (and pay for committee work), MPs get perks such as an expense allowances and a refund for other expenditures required by their post. In addition, they can use public transport and state-owned aircraft for free when travelling on business.
