Eddins: U.S. Ambassador to Slovakia Could Be Announced This Winter

Bratislava, January 1 (TASR) - The name of the new U.S. ambassador to Slovakia will be known within the next few months, and maybe as early as this winter, TASR has been told by U.S. embassy charge d'affaires Keith Eddins.

Eddins noted that Slovakia isn't the only European country for which the selection process for a new ambassador is still in progress. He pointed out that it is a complicated administrative process, far more so than those in other countries, and the time horizon for the arrival of the new ambassador doesn't in any way affect the quality of bilateral relations.

Eddins praised the diplomatic work of Slovak Ambassador to the U.S.A. Peter Burian and the approach of the Slovak side, which gives him enough scope for his activities as charge d'affaires. "I'm looking forward to the new ambassador," he said, adding that he isn't able to provide a specific date on which this person will be appointed, but a certain amount of progress can be expected in the near future.

Touching on the first year in office of U.S. President Barack Obama, Eddins said that relations between the U.S.A. and Europe have maintained their status as a vital partnership for his country. At the same time, the U.S.A. is striving to develop its relations with other countries, including Russia and China. Eddins pointed out that it has been demonstrated over the past year that Washington wants to lead a dialogue and co-operate with the UN in resolving international affairs.

Turning to Afghanistan, Eddins said that the aim of military operations there is to bring stability to the country in order to help the Government to improve the situation and people's future prospects. The international contingents, including the Slovak one, which is due to be expanded, are fighting to accomplish this. The mission will take several more years, however, he added.
