Missik: No Constitutional Changes Will Be Seen Within Next Few Years

Bratislava, December 31 (TASR) - Not a single change in the Constitution was passed in Parliament this year, with the most prominent proposal being the one to restrict MPs' immunity, SDKU-DS MP Peter Missik told TASR at the end of 2009.
In the same breath, Missik said that he doesn't expect any legislative changes in the Constitution until the parliamentary elections (set for the summer of 2010) either.
"I see as lamentable in the next electoral term as well," said Missik, pointing to the fact that a two-thirds majority of 90 (out of 150) votes in the House is required to pass a change in the Constitution. "And the Coalition doesn't have so many votes either," he noted.
At the same time, however, Missik praised the need to obtain 90 votes to make modifications to the Constitution. "If a simple majority was enough, anything could be passed. It's well invented," he said.
No changes in the Constitution are possible at the moment, said Missik, adding that this apparently won't change in the future either due to varying opinions in the House. "Fortunately, we have a good Constitution," he said. If only all those in power behaved according to it, mused the opposition lawmaker.
