Jahnatek: Only Three Companies Quantified Impact of Gas Crisis

Bratislava, December 30 (TASR) - Only three companies have responded to the Economy Ministry's appeal to quantify their losses related to the gas crisis in January of this year, Economy Minister Lubomir Jahnatek has told TASR.
"We contacted around 1,500 companies, asking for data on the economic impact of the cut in gas supplies. Sad to say, we've received only very few answers - less than 1 percent," said Jahnatek.
The remaining companies didn't venture to quantify the financial effects of the interruption in gas supplies because they had just begun to perceive the effects of the economic crisis, said the minister.
"Anyway, Slovak entrepreneurs had a more difficult position in the first quarter of 2009, as they weren't able to carry out certain orders, as they couldn't let their operations run in full," said Jahnatek, noting that it is far more complicated to win back a lost customer than to gain a new one.
"So, we weren't able to quantify the impact of the gas crisis, and therefore we didn't go ahead with any arbitration vis-a-vis the gas supplier (Russia) or the country of transit (Ukraine)," added Jahnatek.
