Fico: We Can't Tackle Unemployment Without Economic Growth

Bratislava, December 30 (TASR) - After a year that was marked by the economic crisis, signs of a revival - albeit a very feint ones - have begun to emerge, Prime Minister Robert Fico has told TASR.

"We are working with information cagily but optimistically. It's good news, as a revival in economic growth is the only way to resolve the problem of unemployment, which is coming as the third wave of the global crisis," said Fico.

"Every prime minister in Europe realises that we won't do anything with unemployment without restarting economic growth," said the premier. He added that Slovakia can built on solid ground before entering the New Year, pointing to the Government's plans to cut the public-finance deficit from 6.3 percent of GDP in 2009 to 5.5 percent in 2010, while the average deficit in the EU is set to rise year-on-year from 7 percent to 7.5 percent in 2010. In addition, Slovakia's public debt will be among the lowest in the Union, despite its projected increase, stressed Fico.

The third piece of good news for Slovakia is that both domestic and international institutions forecast a revival in Slovakia's economic growth of 2-3 percent next year, following a slump this year, added the premier.
