Csaky: SMK's Priority Is to Keep SNS Out of Next Coalition

Bratislava, December 30 (TASR) - Opposition Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK) chairman Pal Csaky said on Wednesday that the main governing party Smer-SD is almost a shoo-in for Slovakia's parliamentary elections due next year.
"The only thing at issue is how many percent and how many seats it will have in Parliament. We'll then consider further alternatives and our priority is to prevent the Slovak National Party (SNS) from joining the Government," said the leader of the ethnic-Hungarian party.
If the Coalition continues in this make-up into the next parliament this will ruin Slovak society. "Political culture, public morale has declined anyway. Economic and social problems have arisen, the worst thing is the fact that the Government lacks a vision of how to fix it. To carry this on for the next four years would be a betrayal of Slovak citizens," he said.
Csaky doesn't rule out post-election cooperation with Smer, but thinks that the best solution for Slovakia would be a coalition of SDKU-DS, the Christian Democrats (KDH) and SMK, much the same as was the case after the 2002 election. He hastened to add, however, that more convincing co-operation would be required for that to happen.
With this in mind, Csaky noted that the said trio has not held a top-level meeting for six months. He said that his party is happy about the most recent success of SDKU in Bratislava region where that party saw its candidate Pavol Freso emerge as Bratislava region governor. But he accused SDKU of entering a nationalist coalition in Nitra region and not backing SMK's petition against the State Language Law at the Constitutional Court.
