Poprad, December 29 (TASR) - Poprad-Tatry airport recorded an increase of approximately 30 percent year-on-year in passenger numbers in December, said the airport's director Ivana Herkelova on Tuesday.
She added that the new regular routes to London, Manchester and Dublin, in operation since November, helped to achieve this growth. "During Christmas, there were also added charter flights to London and Dublin to satisfy the needs of passengers fully," said the director.
Passengers have shown interest in this small international airport, something that was attested to when the first charter flights from Russia and Ukraine arrived on Sunday. Approximately 300 tourists came in, 70 percent of them from Russia, who continued on to the Polish town of Zakopane. The remaining tourists were Ukrainians who predominantly stayed on the Slovak side of the High Tatra mountains.
Herkelova estimates that there will be six charter flights in all during this winter season. The next charter flights from Russia and Ukraine are planned for January 3 and 10, 2010, during the Orthodox Christmas and New Year holidays.
