Gasparovic: Opposition Has Contributed to Smer's Popularity

Bratislava, December 29 (TASR) - The scandals that have afflicted the governing Coalition this year can't be denied, but they were the only fundament on which the Opposition was basing its policy, President Ivan Gasparovic has told TASR.

"If the Smer-SD party, after (3.5) years in Government, during the most severe economic crisis that the world has known, has maintained the public's understanding and its sympathy exceeding 30, sometimes even 40 percent, it's also a result of the Opposition's work. And this speaks volumes as to whether the opposition policies in Slovakia are good or bad," said Gasparovic.

The president claimed that his decision (in July 2006) to appoint the current Government quickly proved to be the right one, as Robert Fico's Cabinet is stable and able to see out its term until the general elections in June 2010.

Gasparovic believes that for the future, Slovakia needs two major political parties that would compete against each other with their profiled programmes, and one or two other smaller parties that would second them.

"The creation of new political parties, I believe, doesn't contribute to political consolidation, quite the reverse," he added.
