Slovnaft: We're Able to Provide Oil If Russian Supplies Are Suspended

Bratislava, December 28 (TASR) - Slovak refinery Slovnaft is able to provide the Slovak market with oil even if Russian supplies via Ukraine are suspended, TASR was told by Slovnaft spokesman Anton Molnar on Monday.

The threat of oil-supply suspension has arisen due to a dispute between Russia and Ukraine.

Molnar said that Slovakia has enough oil reserves for 90 days, and the company is able to cover the domestic market's needs using its own reserves. He added that if situation proves more serious, the company as a member of the MOL Group can use the alternative Adria pipeline from Croatia through Hungary to Slovakia.

Prime Minister Robert Fico after an extraordinary Slovak Security Council meeting on Monday also said that Slovakia has enough reserves for three months.

The Economy Ministry crisis headquarters has recommended that Slovnaft should contract other oil supplies than those from the Russian Druzhba pipeline. Such supplies could reach Slovakia within 25-30 days.

Slovnaft is also closely monitoring the situation vis-a-vis the possible suspension of oil supplies from Russia via Ukraine and is co-operating with the Slovak Economy Ministry, the State Material Reserves Administration and Slovak oil-distributor Transpetrol.

Slovakia and other EU countries are reliant on Russia and Ukraine for the supply and transport of oil and gas.
