Meciar: HZDS Strongly Courted in Run-up to General Election

Bratislava, December 28 (TASR) - Six months prior to Slovakia's next parliamentary elections, co-ruling LS-HZDS chairman Vladimir Meciar told TASR in an interview that he expects to see a tough political battle with everyone fighting everyone else.

Meciar called for an air of chivalry, honesty and purity in the election battle. "This is my true wish. It won't materialise but I would like it to happen that way," he said.

The HZDS leader expects his party to gain at least 10 percent in the election, thereby winning parliamentary seats and possibly forming a government with Smer-SD. "I think that such a duo between Smer-SD and LS-HZDS commanding 76 plus lawmakers would be the most favourable set-up for Slovakia these days," he said.

He added that rather than being shunned, his party is being approached with offers to form a coalition government. "We feel like a desired potential bride," he said, adding that caution is needed because not every groom is suitable and some may be rascals as well.
