Heavy Rains Plaguing Several Parts of Slovakia on Christmas

Kosice/Zvolen/Bratislava, December 25 (TASR) - The flood situation has become more complicated due to heavier rains than expected in Eastern Slovakia on Friday early evening, Dusan Mydla of the Slovak Water-management Company told TASR on the same day.

Meteorologists warn of the possibility of floods in several areas of Slovakia apart from Western Slovakia, with the highest, third degree flood alert being in force in the village of Michalany (Kosice region) on the Ronava river, on the rivers of Hornad, Hnilec and lower Bodrog (Eastern Slovakia), and Hron, Ipel and upper Nitra (Central Slovakia).

Around 150 occupants of an accommodation unit in Zvolen (Banska Bystrica region), among them mainly poor people, had to be evacuated to premises of the Technical University in Zvolen following a decision by the municipality's crisis-management team due to the rising levels of the nearby Slatina and Hron rivers.

In addition, meteorologists expect the precipitation amounts to reach between 20-50 millimetres in several parts of Slovakia within the next few hours.
