Bratislava/Washington, November 19 (TASR) - Speaking at a series of events marking the fall of communism in former Czechoslovakia in Washington this week, Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajcak highlighted the solidarity of the USA in the integration efforts of Slovakia following the fall of communism in 1989, TASR was told by ministry spokesman Peter Stano on Thursday.
"In retrospect, we have to recognise that our path to transatlantic structures wasn't always smooth. That's why, now more than ever, we shouldn't forget the role of our friends in attaining this goal," said Lajcak in an address at the Heritage Foundation think tank in Washington.
He described the ties with the USA as invaluable. "The past 20 years have made it clear that the US presence in Europe isn't only based on trademark brands ... our joint partnership is strongly rooted in common principles," Lajcak said at a seminar in which former U.S. ambassadors to Slovakia and Slovak ambassadors to U.S. were also present.
At an event held at the National Press Club in Washington, Lajcak met representatives of US media, government institutions, Congress and diplomats. "I view Slovakia's story since 1989 as part of a larger story involving the entire region, which went through unprecedented changes," said Lajcak.
