Slovaks Made 2.308 Million Short- and Long-Term Trips in 3Q09

Bratislava, December 23 (TASR) - Slovaks made some 2.308 million short- and long-term trips home and abroad in the third quarter of 2009, 10.1 percent less than in the same period of last year, the Slovak Statistics Office reports on Wednesday.

The total number of nights spend on such trips also decreased - by 16.9 percent.

The lower number of trips made was caused especially by long-term holiday trips (80.3 percent from all trips), which fell by 15.4 percent, with long-term trips abroad falling by 18.4 percent and domestic by 10.7 percent. Average total expenditures on these trips decreased by 6.1 percent, by 5.7 percent on trips abroad, while on domestic trips the expenditures remained the same as last year.

Visiting relatives was the main reason for domestic long-term trips (34.6 percent), while the main reason for long-term trips abroad was seaside holidays (74 percent).

Personal vehicles (63.2 percent) and trains (18.4 percent) were the most used transport means in the long-term domestic trips, and personal vehicles (36.5 percent) and airplanes (32.1 percent) abroad.

During domestic long-term trips, the most used accommodation means were various private arrangements, abroad it was hotels and similar facilities.

The most-visited districts in terms of domestic long-term trips were Poprad (18.4 percent/Presov region), Liptovsky Mikulas (8.1 percent/Zilina region), Prievidza (4.3 percent/Trencin region) and Michalovce (4.3 percent/Kosice region).

Slovaks made their long-term trips abroad mainly to Croatia (28.5 percent), Italy (9.7 percent) and Greece (9.4 percent).

In terms of domestic business trips, the most-visited districts were Bratislava (31.9 percent), Kosice (9.9 percent) and Poprad (7.7 percent/Presov region), while the most business trips abroad were made to the Czech Republic (39.5 percent), Austria (15.8 percent) and Germany (13.2 percent).
