Bratislava, December 23 (TASR) - It can be expected that there will be traffic jams as of January 1 at Slovak border crossings, as lorries will be registering for the new Slovak electronic road toll system, it was announced on Wednesday.
TASR was told by the National Highway Company (NDS) CEO Igor Choma that special contact places have been established as well in order to make the registration process go fast.
Choma said that border crossings with the Czech Republic, Hungary and Austria will certainly be most affected.
It is also drivers and operators themselves who will be responsible for the possible jams as of January, because they're postponing the mandatory registration. NDS expects that up to 60,000 vehicles will be registered by the end of this year, but so far only a third of them have registered.
The system should be launched on January 1, while its construction and operation is being managed by SkyToll consortium, which signed a contact in this respect with NDS in January of this year. The road toll will be collected on about 2,000 km of highways, motorways and first-class roads.
The project is financed by Tatra Banka, Postova Banka and Raiffeisenlandesbank Niederoesterreich-Wien AG in the volume of €107 million. J&T Finance Group will join the construction and operation of this project in 2010, as it has gained a 10-percent share in one of the consortium members - Ibertax company.
