Bratislava Region Governor and MRPs Swear Their Oath of Office

Bratislava, December 23 (TASR) - Bratislava region's Governor Pavol Freso and the 44 regional (VUC/Higher Territorial Unit) MRPs swore an oath in Primatial Palace in Bratislava on Wednesday.

Freso in his short speech promised to lead the region in such a way as to be helpful to all the region's inhabitants. The first VUC session is set to take place on January 22, 2010.

The new Governor also thanked his predecessor (Vladimir Bajan) and former MRPs for their work.

"It is a priority to follow the programme on which the VUC was elected," said Freso, adding that it is expected that Bratislava region will enjoy more dynamic development than other regions especially because it is the Slovak capital.

The most important spheres are, according to Freso, transport, education, and to work on establishing the VUC's identity. Freso said that is problematic at the moment in that the 2010 budget hasn't been approved yet. He will meet with Bratislava VUC employees later on Wednesday.

Savings in the operation of his office and the region as a whole was also advised by Freso. Instead of taking loans in the past crisis period, saving measures should have been introduced, said Freso, adding that it was apparent two years in advance that there will be a crisis. He vowed that he will donate two of his monthly salaries to youth education.

The MRP's oath was also swore by Vladimir Mikus (SDKU). The Central Elections Commission (UVK) called on Mikus on November 28 to give up his mandate because he didn't fulfil the residency conditions to run. As well, Bratislava regional SDKU branch proposed to exclude Mikus from the party, while this issue will be decided on by the party's court.

Mikus said that he gained his mandate in line with legislation. He admitted that 40 days ahead of the elections, when the party submitted the list of candidates, he didn't have the necessary permanent residence permit in the district, but acquired it 10 days before the elections.

"I think there will be no party court," TASR was told by Mikus after he was asked when the party court will take place.
