Analyst Casts Doubt on Chances for PM Fico to Bring In Disclosure Act

Bratislava, December 23 (TASR)- Commenting on Prime Minister Robert Fico's statement that he intends to submit a bill on the requirement for origin of property disclosure in time for parliamentary elections set for June, political analyst Juraj Marusiak threw cold water on the idea Wednesday.
In order for such a law to succeed, it must have the support of more than one political party, according to Marusiak.
"It must be a cause supported by a broad-based majority in parliament, meaning it should be an initiative of a number of political parties," he said.
Marusiak believes that Fico may well have to seek backing for such a law among the Opposition, as support from co-ruling parties LS-HZDS and SNS is far from certain. The question is whether Fico will try to gain a constitutional 90-vote majority in the legislature as the law requires and what the Opposition will want in return, stressed Marusiak.
The law requiring disclosure of property origins is designed to clamp down on property acquired from organised crime as well as illegally-gained property of public officials. The law, by implication, would also have a retroactive effect on people who got rich suddenly in the 1990s.
