SNS: Smer Scared of Its Own Property Disclosure Act

Bratislava, January 4 (TASR) - By suggesting changes to its own law on origin of property disclosure, the Smer-SD party is making it clear that it's afraid of the law that it promoted itself, according to a statement issued by Andrej Danko, first vice-chairman of the fellow opposition Slovak National Party (SNS), on Tuesday.

SNS spokesperson Jana Benkova added for TASR that when the law was being debated SNS legislators cautioned that people would use the legislation as a way of resolving disputes with their neighbours. Just three days after the law came into effect Smer leader Robert Fico has conceded that this is indeed the case, said Benkova.

Former premier Fico said on Monday that the law in question may undergo changes, with Smer considering drawing up an amendment. According to Fico, most of the complaints submitted to the Prosecutor-General's Office - in reference to new, stricter stipulations in the law - actually concern "settling old scores between neighbours", while no genuine complaints concerning public officials and those suspected of criminal activities have been registered.

Fico said that the Prosecutor-General's Office has received around 200 complaints to date, with many others possibly still lying on the tables of district prosecutors.
