Lajcak: Memorandum With Liechtenstein Will Develop Ties

Bratislava, December 21 (TASR) – A memorandum on establishing diplomatic ties between Slovakia and Liechtenstein, which was signed in Bratislava on Monday, is aimed at developing bilateral relations and deals with unresolved issues without prejudice or bias, Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajcak said on the same day.

Until now Liechtenstein was the only country in Europe with which Slovakia had no official diplomatic contacts.

According to Liechtenstein's Foreign Affairs Minister Aurelie Frick, the signing of the memorandum lays down solid foundations for developing political, cultural and economic partnerships. Both countries have sent out a signal for a new beginning, she added. "We aren't drawing a line under the past, but we intend to open a new and more fruitful chapter," she said.

"We've managed to separate existing pending uses from the need to normalise of relations," stated Lajcak, adding that specific areas of bilateral co-operation will be determined shortly.

Liechtenstein scrapped diplomatic relations with the former Czechoslovakia in 1939, and didn't renew them after WWII. Despite this, Slovakia and Liechtenstein have co-operated within international organisations for many years. Further conditions for standardising contacts were created by Slovakia's accession to the EU and subsequent co-operation within the European Economic Area.
