Shipping Company to Press Charges Over Bungled Police Action

Bratislava, December 30 (TASR) - Czech shipping company J&M PAVLAT intends to file a criminal complaint against the Slovak authorities and demand compensation after its lorry-driver Zdenek Pekara was detained in Turkey during a botched police operation, company head Martin Pavlat said on Thursday.

"We've decided to file a criminal complaint in response to the damage that was incurred by the detention of our vehicle and driver Zdenek Pekara in Istanbul and in reaction to statements made by the Police Corps President [Jaroslav Spisiak] and Interior Minister [Daniel Lipsic] at a press conference on Wednesday that grossly besmirched the reputation of our company and domestic and foreign partners," said Pavlat. He added that the complaint will most likely be submitted in the New Year.

As part of an international police operation aimed at arresting a gang of drug traffickers, a lorry headed from Dunajska Streda (Trnava region) to Istanbul was loaded with contraband used in heroin production. The material, which is considered volatile, was supposed to reel in a gang of drug traffickers, but this didn't take place. The lorry's unsuspecting driver was detained and had to spend four days in a Turkish jail.

Both Lipsic and Spisiak defended the actions of the Slovak police while blaming the Turkish authorities for the blunder.
