Jurzyca: Public Finances in Bad Shape, We Had To Let People Go

Bratislava, December 29 (TASR) – The Education Ministry, under the remit of Eugen Jurzyca (SDKU-DS), is reducing the number of its employees from 507 to 473 as of January 1, TASR learned from Jurzyca on Wednesday.
"Due to the situation in public finances, we were forced to let people go. The truth is that at the beginning some of the employees were made redundant due to other reasons – mainly because they were managing the finances (at the Ministry) in a non-effective manner. So I personally was not touched by letting them go," Jurzyca told TASR.
He also said some employees were made redundant because their work was not bringing the desired results, even if they were decent people. "Public finances are in a bad state, we had to reduce the staff by almost 10 percent," he added.
The Education Ministry is also saving money through electronic public procurement – for example, in the distribution of schoolbooks, the Ministry only paid €1.5 million instead of €4 million. "There are two types of saving – one makes the economists happy and it improves the effectiveness of the system, such as electronic tenders, and we are very happy that we were able to get cheaper prices in purchases. Then there is the less popular means of saving – cutting staff or their salaries," explained Jurzyca.
