The Christmas Tree in Slovakia

Bratislava, December 24 (TASR) - The Christmas tree is a symbol of Christmas and a symbol of life as an evergreen.
The Christmas tree came to Slovakia from German and Austrian towns at the end of the 18th century, initially via the upper classes. By the end of the 19th century, the habit spread among ordinary people, and it was firmly established by the 1930s, during the first Czechoslovak Republic.
The church accepted the Christmas tree as the tree of paradise. At first, it was hung from the ceiling above the table, only later was it was placed on the ground.
The first presents under the tree appeared at the beginning of the 20th century, but children could only take the sweets from it after Twelfth Night, or Epiphany (January 6).
Nowadays, Christmas trees are often seen on the main squares of towns and villages.
