Figel: Around €2.2 bn Could Be Used from EU Funds on Slovak Motorways

(TV Markiza, December 19, 'Na Telo')

In total, around €2.2 billion in total could flow in from the EU funds to be used on motorway construction in Slovakia, Transport Minister Jan Figel (KDH) said on the TV Markiza weekly political chat show 'Na Telo' on Sunday.

According to Figel, each of his colleagues in the Cabinet is expected to transfer tens of millions of euros from their budget chapter into Operational Programme 'Transport', which should then contain €400 million in total - the amount to be used for building the Visnove tunnel (Zilina region), a project requiring an additional €300 million from the state coffers to be completed.

Opposite Figel on the show was chairman of opposition Smer-SD and former premier Robert Fico, who cast doubts over the Government's effort to use EU money to co-fund motorway projects. "There's no money. The whole strategic framework contains €11 billion for all the areas together, and in the Operational Programme 'Transport' there is a minimum of resources," said Fico. Furthermore, he doesn't believe that the other ministers in the Cabinet would be willing to give their money up for the sake of motorway construction.
