Figel: PPP Projects Should Only Be Used When EU Money Isn't Available

Bratislava, December 16 (TASR) - The first public-private partnership (PPP) package for road construction was supposed to cost around €9 million over 30 years and the third one €8.5 billion, but this isn't how the current Transport Ministry management will do things, said Transport Minister Jan Figel (Christian Democrat/KDH), adding that people must bear responsibility for their children and grandchildren.
Figel argued that PPP projects should mainly be used when money from EU Funds isn't available.
Former transport minister Lubomir Vazny (Smer-SD) criticised Figel for failing to allocate enough money to road construction.
"The budget is going up by 24 percent," countered Figel, adding that it's being increased from €761 million to €900 million next year. "We want to build motorways to the full extent and in line with the ambition that was in place here, but in a different way," he said.
