Fico Allegedly Asks Sulik for Post at General-Prosecutor's Office

Bratislava, December 14 (TASR) - Smer-SD chairman Robert Fico allegedly wanted to do a trade with Parliamentary Speaker Richard Sulik (Freedom and Solidarity/SaS) about the Prosecutor-General's election, Most-Hid chairman Bela Bugar said on Tuesday.

In return for giving their votes to Coalition candidate Jozef Centes, Smer-SD was asking for the post of "Prosecutor General Deputy for criminal law," said Bugar. According to the organisation structure of the institution, these powers are vested in the Second Secretary of Prosecutor General by law.

"If my information is correct, they (Smer-SD) were interested in doing a certain trade," said Bugar, who thinks that such an important issue shouldn't be subject to any trade. He added that Smer-SD's interest in the post might stem from "the party having some concerns".

As for Smer-SD calling on the Coalition to find a joint candidate, Bugar doesn't think such an effort is feasible. "Try to find someone in little Slovakia who would present their own face in the media, where they may well come under attack and, at the same time, be acceptable to every political party," said Bugar.

Fico, in his account of the meeting with Sulik said: "We talked about rules of procedure and the need for having the Prosecutor-General's election carried out in December. I also maintained that it might be appropriate for them to stop nominating party-affiliated candidates but try to find a candidate who could also enjoy the support of the Opposition," said Fico.
