Viktor Orban Chooses to Meet with SMK and Not Most-Hid Reps

Bratislava, December 14 (TASR) - Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban had an opportunity to set right relations between the Hungarian party FIDESZ and Most-Hid (bridge in Slovak and Hungarian) on Tuesday during his official visit to Bratislava, however, he chose not to meet with any Most-Hid representatives.
"It's his decision, we take it as such. Apparently, it shows that no partnership on their part is possible. We'll act accordingly," Most-Hid chairman Bela Bugar told TASR on Tuesday.
Bugar thinks that Orban chose this approach in order to weaken a political party that, although being a part of Parliament and Government, wants to co-operate with Fidesz as an equal partner and not as its subordinate. He pointed out that the Hungarian Government acted the same way in the past, not only with respect to Slovakia but Romania as well.
Earlier in the day, Orban met with representatives of non-parliamentary ethnic-Hungarian SMK party for lunch. According to SMK chairman Jozsef Berenyi, the discussion revolved around priorities of Hungarian EU chairmanship.
Berenyi refused to comment on the decision of the Hungarian Prime Minister to pick SMK [which fell below the 5-percent threshold to enter Parliament this year due to the party split that saw Most-Hid and its reconciliation-oriented policies win the day - ed.note] and not parliamentary Most-Hid party as a partner for dialogue.
"I, for one, am glad that they have chosen us as their strategic partner in Slovakia," said Berenyi, adding that the (Slovak) State Language Act amendment, dual citizenship and planned amendments to the Act on the Use of Minority Languages were discussed, too.
