Radicova: Poll Results in Kosovo Show Serious Damage to Democracy

Bratislava, December 14 (TASR) - Results of the general election in Kosovo over the past weekend suggest that democracy in the self-declared Balkans state was given a serious blow, according to Prime Minister Iveta Radicova.

"We'll demand that the EU sends a clear signal, at least expressing worries that the democratic institutions in this country have been violated," said Radicova in Parliament on Tuesday.

At the same time Radicova confirmed that Slovakia's stance towards Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence in February 2008 is unchangeable for the moment. She added that Slovakia's decision not to recognise Kosovar independence has proven to be a good one.

Slovakia is one of four EU member states that haven't recognise Kosovo to date – Spain, Romania and Cyprus being the others.

Last week's general election in Kosovo was marked by a number of irregularities, observers said. One of the local districts, for example, had the turnout reaching an impossible 149 percent.

All Kosovar parties that ran in the election – with the exception of the winning (Democratic Party of Kosovo, led by current premier Hashim Thaci) – have already filed complaints over alleged election scams and forgery.
