Survey: Most Slovaks Not Motivated or Afraid to Report Bribes

Bratislava, December 12 (TASR) - Slovaks who been asked to give a bribe aren't motivated to report such cases of corruption, suggests the latest survey on this issue in Slovakia.

Over the past year, one in nine households in Slovakia experienced or have been aware of at least one case of bribery in the public sphere. More than 70 percent of them didn't report it or weren't motivated to do so, according to figures released by Transparency International Slovensko (TIS).

TIS director Gabriel Sipos said that the reporting of corrupt activities is still at a poor level even though the law obliges witnesses to report corruption.

The recent survey was carried out on a sample of 1,120 respondents. "Only 8 percent of those who were asked to give a bribe reported it," said Sipos.

Around one third of those asked said that they don't believe that reporting bribery would change anything. Another 25 percent said that they feared possible negative consequences or 'revenge' in some form. Others claimed that the reporting procedure is either time-consuming or completely unknown to them.
