Miklos: Budget Not Ideal, But Best We Could Agree On

Bratislava, December 7 (TASR) - The state budget for 2011, as drafted by the Finance Ministry, isn't ideal or flawless, admitted Finance Minister Ivan Miklos (SDKU-DS) during a debate on the budget in Parliament on Tuesday. However, it's the best proposal that the Coalition was able to come up with, he added.

"Consolidation efforts representing 2.5 percent of the budget has been planted ... so that the Slovak economy won't be devastated," said Miklos in his closing speech after two days of debate on the 2011 budget proposal in Parliament.

Calculated per household, consolidation measures would translate into an average household in Slovakia losing €9.30 a month. "These are facts and solid figures, as opposed to the scaremongering that you're doing," said Miklos, addressing opposition MPs who claim that it's people that will be most affected by the austerity measures.

The vote to approve the budget is expected to take place on Wednesday.
