Lipsic: Car Owners to Be Held Accountable for Traffic Misdemeanours

Bratislava, December 6 (TASR) - Accountability when it comes to traffic misdemeanours should affect not only drivers but also car owners, Interior Minister Daniel Lipsic said at a joint press conference with his Hungarian counterpart Sandor Pinter on Monday.
Lipsic reported that legislation dealing with this should be dealt with next year. Hungary already has such a law in place and this has helped to reduce the number of fatal car accidents, claimed Pinter.
"The number of misdemeanours coming under this law has fallen significantly. All in all, there has been a 40-percent reduction," said Pinter.
"This means that we'll be able to use permanently placed radar devices to measure speed. Car owners will be held accountable until it's demonstrated that they weren't driving the car because, for example, the car had been stolen," said Lispic.
The two ministers also discussed Hungary's priorities when it assumes the EU presidency in January. The joint priorities of Slovakia and Hungary are combating corruption and organised crime, road safety and co-operation in tackling the effects of natural disasters, said Lipsic.
"Your priorities are our priorities as well, so I can declare that we'll also represent Slovakia's interests," said Pinter.
