Figel: KDH Will Survive and Defeat Populism of the Leftists

Bratislava, December 4 (TASR) - The co-operation of central-right parties is an efficient alternative to the populism of the left in Slovakia, said chairman of Christian Democrats (KDH) Jan Figel in his speech that opened the KDH's congress session on Saturday.

In its 20-year-long history, KDH has co-operated with many political partners and fought against many rivals, recalled Figel, expressing his belief that the party will also go through today's political pressures. "KDH survived and defeated meciarism, it'll also defeat post-communism and populism," he promised.

According to Figel, the Coalition has come into a crisis, however, due to the unsuccessful vote for the joint Coalition candidate for the Prosecutor General.

He also criticised that earlier this week four KDH MPs voted against raising the excise tax on beer. "This was a mistake that can't be repeated," said Figel, pointing to the lack of trust that has appeared within the ruling Coalition.

"The Coalition is varied in opinions, but it's not afraid of the reforms that are necessary for Slovakia," said leader of Christian Democrats, presenting plans in a number of sectors.

The main agenda of the congress meeting includes changes in the party's statues and electing new leadership, where changes at the posts of vice-chairs are expected.
