EU: Two Priority Energy Corridors Concern Slovakia

Brussels, December 3 (TASR-correspondent) - Slovakia will strive towards the costly building of alternate energy routes in co-operation with the Visegrad Four grouping (Slovakia, Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland), Slovak Economy Ministry State Secretary Martin Chren said after a session of the EU Council of Energy Ministers in Brussels on Friday.

It was agreed at the session that in the years to come the EU will support the building of energy infrastructure from countries' own resources. The specific sum allocated for this purpose will be revealed later, however.

The European Commission said last month that energy priorities will concern the construction of seven main corridors, two of which will involve Slovakia. The goals relate to the next two decades beginning in 2011.

"[Slovakia is concerned with] the construction of transmission capacities for gas - the so-called north-south link, and the completion of capacities in the electricity transmission system," said Chren.

"The connection of gas infrastructure from Poland to terminals in Croatia will concern all the Visegrad Four countries. When it comes to the electricity system, this will involve the linking of Central and South-eastern Europe," said Chren, adding that gas-transmission measures should prevent crises like the one involving a dispute between Ukraine and Russia in January 2009.
