Parliament Passes Amendment Introducing Cuts in MPs' Salaries

Bratislava, December 2 (TASR) - The Parliament on Thursday passed an amendment to the Remuneration of Select Public Officials Act. The proposal, drafted by Parliamentary Chairman Richard Sulik (Freedom and Solidarity/SaS), was supported by 78 out of 145 present MPs, with 67 Opposition MPs choosing not to vote.

According to the amendment, MP salaries will be calculated from the public deficit: if the deficit reaches seven or more percent, the MP salaries will be cut by 15 percent of the threefold of the average monthly nominal wage. In case the deficit stands between 5-7 percent, there will be 10-percent reduction, and if the deficit reaches 3-5 percent, MPs' salaries will go down by 5 percent. There will be no cuts if the deficit is under 3 percent.
