Bratislava, November 24 (TASR) - The US flag was symbolically lifted off 'Friend-Partner-Ally' as part of the book-warming of author Pavol Demes's new publication on the modern history of Slovak-American relations at the American Embassy in Bratislava on the occasion of 20th anniversary re-opening of the US Consulate building at Hviezdoslav Square on Wednesday.
US Ambassador to Slovakia Theodore Sedgwick said that the development of Slovak-American relations dates back longer than 20 years, and played a key role in the formation of the first Czechoslovak Republic (to wit, the Cleveland Agreement of 1915 and the Pittsburgh Agreement of 1918 which formed the basis for the founding of the first republic), as well as the process of gaining independence for Slovakia 18 years ago.
Demes, a former foreign minister (1991-92) and more recently of the German Marshall Fund in Slovakia, thanked all those who contributed to the creation of the book, including TASR for providing its photographic archive and information databases.
